Metal or shingle

Metal is the better roof on fewer DFW houses than the marketing suggests.

Metal outperforms asphalt on several measures that matter in North Texas, and it is still the wrong specification for a large number of the houses it gets sold to. The comparison is worth doing properly, because the difference is not a product decision alone — it is a decision about roof geometry, detailing skill, insurance treatment and how long the owner intends to stay.

In short

Longevity, wind performance, fire behaviour and a simple, uncluttered roof plane that shows the material off. On a straightforward gable or hip with few penetrations, a standing-seam roof installed well is a long-horizon asset.

01

The insurance question people skip

Some carriers apply cosmetic damage exclusions or endorsements to metal roofs, meaning denting that does not affect performance is not covered. In a hail region that is a material term, and it is worth reading before the panels are ordered, not after the first storm.

02

Where metal is the wrong answer

On a heavily cut-up roof with many junctions, where the budget forces an exposed-fastener product onto a house that needed standing seam, where HOA rules restrict the finish, where an owner is moving in a few years, or where the owner has been told metal cannot be damaged by hail.

03

Exposed fastener is not standing seam

They are sold under the same word and behave differently. Exposed-fastener panels rely on hundreds of gasketed screws that need periodic attention as the gaskets age. Standing seam conceals its attachment and allows thermal movement. Comparing a cheap metal roof with a good shingle roof compares the wrong two things.

Questions

Useful answers, without overpromising.

Is a metal roof worth the extra cost?

It depends on how long you will own the house, how complex the roof is, and how your carrier treats cosmetic denting. On a simple roof with a long ownership horizon the case is strong. On a complex roof with a short horizon it usually is not.

Will a metal roof survive hail undamaged?

No metal roof is hail-proof. Panels resist penetration well but dent, and thinner gauges and softer metals dent more readily. Treat any claim that metal ends your hail exposure as a sales line rather than a description of the material.

Is a metal roof noisier in rain?

Over a solid deck with underlayment, insulation and an attic beneath, the difference indoors is far smaller than people expect. Noise is a property of the assembly, not of the metal, and it is a poor reason to rule the system out.

Can metal go on part of the roof and shingles on the rest?

It is common and it can be done well. Porch roofs, dormers, bay windows and low-slope tie-ins are often metal on an otherwise shingled house, and metal is sometimes the only right answer where a section is too flat for shingles at all. The work is at the transition. Where two systems meet, water, thermal movement and fastening all have to be detailed deliberately, so ask how that junction is being built rather than assuming the two roofs simply arrive at each other.

If a panel is damaged later, can one panel be replaced?

It is harder than it sounds on a standing-seam roof, because panels interlock and their fixings are concealed, so reaching one usually means working back from a seam or an edge. The second problem is appearance: a panel made today will not match one that has spent years in Texas sun, even in the same colour and finish. Ask before you buy how a repair would actually be carried out, and whether the profile and finish are likely to remain available.
