Membrane guide

TPO, PVC and EPDM are not interchangeable.

Single-ply is sold as one category and behaves as three. TPO and PVC are thermoplastics, joined with hot air, and a weld made today can be remade in the same material years from now. EPDM is a cured rubber that will not fuse to itself at all; its seams are tape or adhesive. That difference decides how each roof gets repaired, and it is rarely raised before a system is chosen.

In short

TPO and PVC seams are hot-air welded, fusing two sheets into one material. A weld can be probed for continuity and remade later with the same equipment. That repairability is the practical argument for a thermoplastic on any roof that will be worked on repeatedly.

01

Reflectivity is a membrane-life argument first

White surfaces run cooler, which slows the ageing of the sheet itself and reduces heat driven into the assembly. What that does to a utility bill depends on the insulation below, how tight the building is and how the equipment runs. Black EPDM handles cold and thermal cycling well; on a Texas roof with a long cooling season, colour is a real decision rather than a preference.

02

Where each one is the wrong answer

Dark membrane on a building fighting summer heat load works against the mechanical plant. PVC on a property with no chemical exposure buys a resistance the roof will never use. TPO under constant service traffic needs a walkway layout specified with it, because the failure will not be the sheet, it will be the path everyone walks.

03

Attachment matters more than the sheet

Mechanically fastened, fully adhered and ballasted assemblies move differently over the deck and behave differently in wind uplift. A fastened roof flutters; an adhered one does not, and costs more to install. Two estimates naming the same membrane describe two different roofs when attachment method is left off the page.

Questions

Useful answers, without overpromising.

Can TPO and PVC be welded together?

No. They are different polymer families and a weld between them is not dependable. Where two systems meet, the transition is a designed detail. This is one reason patching an unidentified membrane with whatever is on the truck creates a problem later.

Does one membrane outperform the others in North Texas heat?

Heat ages every membrane and surface colour changes the rate. The larger variable is the assembly underneath and the standard of the seam and detail work. A well-detailed roof in an ordinary material outlives a poorly detailed one in a premium sheet.

How do we find out what membrane is already on the building?

Start with the paperwork: a manufacturer warranty certificate, the original contract or a maintenance file will usually name the system. Failing that it is read on the roof — seam type, surface texture, thickness at a cut, and whether the sheet carries a reinforcing scrim. A small test cut answers it definitively and shows what insulation sits underneath at the same time. Guessing is the expensive option, because a repair made in the wrong material is a repair that gets done twice.

Does membrane thickness matter, or is it a specification number?

It matters, and the figure to look at is not only the overall thickness. Reinforced membranes carry a scrim, and what resists foot traffic, hail and weathering is the thickness of material above that scrim rather than the total. Two sheets quoted at the same overall thickness can differ in the layer that actually wears. Ask for the product data sheet rather than a number in a proposal, and read the two lines together.

Why do estimates for the same building differ so much on insulation?

Because insulation is where a low-slope estimate has the most room in it. Board thickness, the number of layers and how their joints are staggered, whether a cover board is included, whether existing insulation is being reused, and whether a tear-off triggers a code-required minimum are all decisions hiding under one word on a proposal. Ask for the assembly written out layer by layer. Membranes are easy to compare. What sits under them is where two prices stop being comparable.
