The covering gets the attention and the assembly underneath sets the outcome. A shingle cooked from below by a hot, static attic ages faster than the same shingle on a well-ventilated roof, and the manufacturer knows it — which is why ventilation appears in the installation instructions and, more pointedly, in the warranty exclusions.

Trapped attic heat raises the shingle temperature beyond what the sun alone produces and keeps it there. That accelerates the loss of volatile oils from the asphalt, which is the process that ends a shingle’s useful life.

A general ventilating-area guideline is a way to sanity-check a design. What the warranty is actually conditioned on is the ventilation requirement in that product’s own published installation instructions, which is the document a manufacturer reads from when a claim arrives. Those are not always the same number.

Warm indoor air leaking into a cold attic condenses on the underside of the sheathing. Over seasons that means damp panels, corroded fastener heads and reduced holding power — a covering losing its grip on the deck rather than wearing out on top of it, and a bathroom fan discharging into the attic as often as anything on the roof.

Spray-foamed, conditioned attic assemblies are deliberately unvented and are a legitimate approach, but they change the rules. Manufacturer instructions and warranty terms treat them separately, and applying the vented-attic ventilation calculation to one is a category error.

Correcting a genuinely unbalanced or blocked system removes a known accelerator of asphalt ageing, which helps. Adding exhaust to a roof that already has adequate balanced airflow does not, and can make it worse. Diagnose before adding.
It is one of the more common grounds a manufacturer cites when declining a claim. The published installation instructions set the ventilation requirement, and the warranty is conditioned on the roof being installed to them. Check the requirement before the job, not at claim time.
From inside the attic on a hot day: look for daylight and airflow at the eaves, rusted nail points, damp or stained sheathing, and insulation blocking the soffit path. From the ground you cannot tell, which is why it is a standard part of an assessment.
No. Asphalt that has hardened does not soften back and granules that have gone are gone. What correcting it does is remove the accelerator, so the service life left in the covering runs down at a normal rate rather than a fast one, and the next covering starts on an attic that is not working against it. On an older roof the honest framing is that the work is being done for the next roof as much as for this one — which is a reason to do it at replacement, not a reason to skip it.
Ventilation is usually a pre-existing condition of the house rather than something a roofer created, but assessing it is part of installing a covering whose warranty depends on it. A proposal should say what the attic currently has, whether that meets the requirement in the chosen product's instructions, and what is being changed. Where ventilation was never mentioned at all and the covering later fails early, the question of who should have raised it is a difficult one to settle after the fact.
