Asphalt shingles

Compare the entire shingle system—not a color board alone.

Asphalt shingles are installed as part of a layered roof assembly. Product selection matters, but so do deck condition, underlayment, edges, flashings, ventilation, fastening, accessories, and installation instructions.

How the system behaves

Performance is an assembly, not a product name.

Flat asphalt shingle courses with regularly spaced vertical slots forming a repeating three-tab profile above a white gutter.

Architectural and other profiles

Appearance, construction, ratings, availability, and price vary; marketing names alone are not enough.

Ventilation and heat

Roof color is one variable among attic air sealing, insulation, ventilation design, orientation, climate, and assembly.

Future repairability

Retain product/color records and spare material where practical because matching can become difficult.

Questions

Useful answers, without overpromising.

What does “lifetime” mean on a shingle?

It is a warranty term governed by specific written conditions, limitations, ownership rules, and coverage periods—not a promise the roof lasts forever.

Are architectural shingles impact resistant?

Not automatically, and the two words get confused constantly. “Architectural” describes how a shingle looks — thicker, layered, with a dimensional shadow line. “Impact resistant” describes how it performed in a specific impact test, and it is a separate rating a product either holds or does not. Plenty of architectural shingles are not impact rated. Ask for the exact product and its current classification rather than the category.

Is a heavier shingle a better shingle?

Not on its own. Weight per square correlates loosely with mat and asphalt content, and it is not a rating. The numbers that are ratings — wind, impact, fire — belong to the exact product and to the way it is installed, not to a category or a marketing tier. Compare the current published classification for the specific product, then compare what its printed instructions require the rest of the assembly to be.

How much does the colour actually matter here?

Less than it is usually sold as, and not nothing. Surface colour affects how hot the covering runs, but attic air sealing, insulation and the balance of intake and exhaust ventilation move that figure a great deal more than the shade does. Where colour genuinely matters is availability and matching: a discontinued blend is what turns a future repair into a visible patch. Choose for the house, and write down what was chosen.
