A guard is a reasonable purchase for the right property and an expensive disappointment for the wrong one. The useful way to think about them is not which is best, but what each design does when it stops working — because all of them eventually do, and the failure is usually quieter and harder to spot than the blocked gutter it replaced.

What this covers
Micro-mesh, perforated screen, reverse-curve surface-tension covers, and foam or brush inserts. They keep different debris out, they clean differently, and they fail differently. None of them is maintenance-free, and a product sold as maintenance-free is describing a marketing position rather than a physical property.
A great many designs slide under the first course of shingles. That lifts the starter course, can break the seal at the eave, and in some cases puts a fastener through the covering. Whether that is compatible with the roofing manufacturer's printed instructions is a question worth asking before installation rather than after a claim on the roof.
The mesh fine enough to stop oak catkins and pine needles is also fine enough to blind over with shingle grit, pollen film and dust. When it does, water sheets straight off the front of the gutter and past it. That reads to an owner as a leak or an overflow, and it is neither — it is a screen that needs washing.
What to know
Surface-tension designs rely on water clinging around a curve into the opening. North Texas rain arrives fast and hard, and past a certain intensity water carries straight over the nose. On a steep roof feeding a long run, that threshold is reached more often than the brochure implies.
It will not fix an undersized system, a back-pitched run, too few downspouts, or a blocked underground line. Those cause most overflow complaints. A guard sold as the remedy for any of them is being sold against the wrong diagnosis, and the overflow will continue with a screen on top of it.
A heavily treed lot. A second-story run that is not safe to clean at a sensible interval. A valley outlet that packs solid every autumn. Specified as a maintenance decision with a stated cleaning interval, they are a sound purchase. Specified as a permanent end to gutter maintenance, they are not.

Yes. What changes is the interval and the nature of the job — washing a screen rather than scooping a trough. Any product presented as removing the need entirely has moved the maintenance rather than removed it.
