The limits are part of the record

What could not be seen.

Access, weather, pitch and safety limit what can be observed. A useful record identifies which areas were reviewed and which could not be assessed.

In this sample the east ridge was not reached. Nothing about its condition is asserted — not that it is fine, not that it is failing. It is logged as unchecked, with no photograph attached to it, so the next assessment starts from the truth.

How to read a record

Four things every finding has to carry.

Use these against any contractor’s report, not only this one. A finding missing any of the four is an assertion, not evidence.

    Condition

    What is physically there, described without adjectives that argue for a sale.

  2. 02

    Consequence

    What the condition could mean and why the proposed next step matters.

  3. 03

    Priority

    Act now, monitor, or simply recorded — with the evidence the band rests on.

  4. 04

    Limit

    What could not be seen, and why. An unknown that is written down is worth more than a guess.
